Whilst Team Sky are very much the flagship cycling team in Britain they could, over the coming years, face some welcome competition as ONE Pro Cycling, a new British, UCI-ranked team set up for 2015, gets set to launch.
The squad, which will see Elite Road Series winner Yanto Barker as the main rider, will see British Cycling Olympic Development Coach Matt Winston take on the role of lead directeur sportif. He will be joined on the management side of the team by Steve Benton, a former Human Performance Coach for Formula 1 and World Rally drivers, who will be the team’s Performance Coach.
Perhaps the biggest name to be involved with the team though is former England cricket international Mat Prior, who himself is a keen cyclist.
"Cycling is a huge passion of mine and I am delighted to be setting up ONE Pro Cycling with a team of experienced and dedicated people. It will be a big challenge but one I’m thoroughly looking forward to," said Prior.
"The group of riders we have is an exceptional one – not only because of the team's ability on the bike but also the spirit we have off it.
"We have a team that could potentially do something very special and that excites me."
The team's licence hasn't been officially confirmed yet, but it is expected to be so in the coming days allowing them to take their place in the Continental ranks.
